Solatrium 6

Bodega Bay, California

Bruins-Slot Architects

Ralph Bruins-Slot, Principal

Designed and built under a grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) this 2000+ sq. ft. home sits 300 yards from the ocean and provides a truly unique living experience.  Roughly 85 % of the annual space and water heating requirements are met by the collection of solar energy. The structure's roughly triangular shape minimizes northern and maximizes southern exposure.  Excess heat from the solarium at the entry to the building is vented to a rock storage area beneath the house which can store up to 72 hours of heat reserves.  The system is controlled by sensors, automatically opening and closing various dampers or activating the backup electric furnace to provide consistent temperatures year around.
